Klompen

In my last post about Kinderdijk, did you notice the big yellow wooden clogs on the miller?

The Dutch are famous for their Klompen, or wooden shoes.  Klomp is the Dutch for clog and Klompen means whole foot clog.

Here you can see them lining the wall of the Museum Windmill in Kinderdijk.  Actually, everywhere you go you can find some sort of Klompen for sale in gift shops.

Most are traditionally painted yellow like these the miller was sporting or are white with blue delft designs.

Even some of the boots in the Museum Windmill look like the base was made from Klompen.

And as much as I love shoes, I am sure Keith is thrilled that I did not bring any Klompen home with me!

Here you could even have your picture taken in a large pair of Klompen.  Since we were not willing to pay to do that, I settled for just a picture of the Klompen.

But our Viking Program Director Nick did oblige the group and have his picture taken in this huge Klompen on our way back to the ship.  This gives new meaning to shoes like boats!  He looks like he could sail down the canal in this monster Klompen!  Only in Holland!
